An award is the Fair Work instrument that sets minimum pay for a kind of work. Your job title is a clue. The duties, the industry, and whether a more specific award already applies are what decide it. If two awards could fit, the more specific one applies. The Miscellaneous Award does not sit on top of Retail, Fast Food, or any other award that already covers you.
Start from the work, not the brand
- A shop floor, register, or storeroom in a retail store. Look at the General Retail Industry Award.
- A takeaway, quick-service restaurant, or fast food counter. Look at the Fast Food Industry Award.
- Hairdressing or beauty therapy in a salon. Look at the Hair and Beauty Industry Award.
- Office, reception, accounts, or other clerical work in the private sector. Look at the Clerks — Private Sector Award.
- Selling or managing property, or supporting a real estate agency. Look at the Real Estate Industry Award.
- Security officer or crowd control work. Look at the Security Services Industry Award.
- A theme park, museum, zoo, or other leisure venue (not an exhibition role). Look at the Amusement, Events and Recreation Award.
- None of the above, and no other industry award fits. Look at the Miscellaneous Award.
When this list is the wrong place
Hospitality, aged care, construction, and many other industries have their own awards. Casual Pay does not price those. A written contract or enterprise agreement can also pay above the award, or set a different roster rule. The estimate is still the award minimum, not whatever your contract says.
If you are unsure, use the Fair Work Commission’s Find My Award tool, then open that award’s page here if Casual Pay covers it.
Check a real shift
Pick your award and enter start and end times — Casual Pay applies the loadings that match that award.
